Introduction to the Domestic Cat Breeds and Big Cats

Since the days of the early Egyptians, cats have purred their way into the hearts of humans, earning respect and companionship while still maintaining an element of mystery. Perhaps the human fascination with the felid family results from a cat's preference for independence while still forming strong bonds with their human companions.

Cat Breeds

The diversity of domestic cat breeds results not only from natural species variation, but also from hybridization efforts. The various breeds can be separated on the basis of body type:

The Big Cats

Because cats maintain a strictly carnivorous diet, these big cats have earned a reputation as violent hunters. Lithe muscles, nocturnal vision, a highly developed sense of smell and sensitive hearing create an effective hunting package that places these cats at the top of the food chain.

While humans may never fully understand the nature of cats, they can enjoy the company of their domesticated pets while remaining in awe of their mystique and of the similarity to their larger cousins in the wild. Perhaps it is this dichotomy of nature that led the Egyptians to grant their feline companions a place in their worship, in their homes, and in their tombs.
